StorReduce Single Server Edition Deployment Guide

Introduction

The StorReduce Single-Server Edition is designed for small deployments and trials of StorReduce (up to 2PB) and comes pre-configured for use in a single-server configuration.

Extra Functionality

The StorReduce Single-Server Edition bundles a subset of the components that typically run on the StorReduce Monitor Server in multi-server scale-out clusters. These components are included for convenience to help create a “batteries included” single-server deployment.

The bundled components provide statistics aggregation powered by Prometheus, a timeseries database, and Grafana, an analytics and monitoring system. Both of these components run in isolated Docker containers within the Single-Server appliance.

Once the Single-Server appliance has been deployed Grafana can be accessed via port 3000 where the StorReduce dashboard can be opened:

Default Configuration

The StorReduce Single-Server Edition comes pre-configured with the following default options:

  • Cluster IP Address automatically set to 127.0.0.1 on VMware or the instance’s private IP on Amazon EC2
  • StorReduce port configuration left as default
  • StorReduce shard count set to 12
  • StorReduce replica count set to 0
  • StorReduce configured to retrieve metrics from Prometheus on local host
  • Grafana configured to retrieve metrics from Prometheus on local host
  • StorReduce automatically started on first-boot (the StorReduce Cluster Edition requires additional configuration via SSH after first-boot)

StorReduce Single-Server Edition is optimized to run on a single-server. The default configuration of 12 shards provides a good blend of performance and (limited) expansion options. If in time the single-server becomes a bottleneck, the Single-Server Edition supports being expanded to a cluster of 3 servers, where each server will be responsible for 4 of the 12 shards, however, we strongly recommend using the StorReduce Cluster Edition if you anticipate requiring a cluster for HA, performance, or volume reasons now or in the future.

Deployment

StorReduce Single-Server is currently available for use on Amazon EC2 or on-premises via a VMware OVA file. Please contact us to request a free trial for your preferred platform.
